I have a machine with the dreaded intel i8xxx series of chips. After installing the intel driver, video is fairly stable but slow. The later drivers for xservers > 1.6.x are supposed to offer dramatic performance increases as well as greater stability. The xserver version on VL however is 1.4.x. I would like to upgrade to one of the > 1.6 series xservers.
Anyone have experience doing this? Know of any limitations i might run into? Im perfectly happy to complie a new kernel if need be, but how many layers of dependencies might i run into with the xserver itself?

Thanks
