Hi,
Looking at joe's post on vl reviews and mentions I saw on that review, they have a link to vectorlinux screenshots page, and realized no 5.8 screenshots are shown there (only 5.1 and previous).

Should we (comunity) post some screenshots of default configuration, or devs prefer to do it?
IMHO, having the website up to date is essential...

Regards

I think it would be useful to post screenshots. Just try not to post large graphics in the forum itself, mainly because some of our readers are on dialup connections where they pay per-minute charges and/or have caps on the bandwidth they can use each month. I would suggest putting the screenshots on a site like photobucket.com and put hyperlinks here.

Once Vector sees some shots, I'm sure he'll get the best of the best for the web site. ;-)

Cheers,
John

Alright then!... I guess I'll go first... Not sure these are much to look at, but here are some screenies of my heavily modified VL 5.8 std... Enjoy the eye-candy... It's on me this time Wink

If all other distros can... VL certainly can too!.

WOW!  M0E-lnx, I'm impressed! Have not seen Beryl in action before. Was it a lot of work to get it running on VL?

I have the same version of vec. M0e made a special cd version of vec with xorg 7.1 .There are some minor bugs to squash, but it works pretty well.
Beryl guys make new releases  each week, which is pretty exciting because we get to see more and more new features..
Beryl is considerably easy to build from svn...

Actually, it's done... here it is http://www.vectorlinux.com/forum2/index.php?topic=1406.0

However, for the easiest process, simply download the Beryl enabled Live CD Wink

now i have a clean install on vec at the laptop and while my dad isnt using it,I managed to make a bunch of screenies...

my first impressions of vec 5.8 gold~

>boot menu image -- i didnt like it,sry.
>login screen - I liked it,pretty glossy and polished, but why that kde-ish blue-everywhere
>default wallpaper -- again,it had the style of the boot menu, same ol blue. Sry,I didnt like it
>icon set-- pretty good =)  I got used to it too
>organisation of the desktop: its abit crowded down there (the panel) You need to free some space for the task list and the tray..  and two desktops is better than 4

Other than that- You did a pretty good job . =)

VectorLinux 5.8 SOHO Alpha 4, with a window decoration modification:

http://clientes.netvisao.pt/alynnsut/soho_5.8_alpha4.png

Before pelting me with eggs and tomatoes over the vista look, let me explain myself  Grin:

I found this window decoration quite interesting since it does not require that composite rendering be enabled in xorg to function smoothly.
My nvidia TNT card with only 16mb of ram handles the translucency without any hiccups (but must have nvidia's proprietary driver installed of course...); and its not like aterm's fake transparency, this theme draws the overlay in real-time.
The theme is certainly good for those who do not wish to have a full-fledged 3d desktop + beryl/compiz just to get some decent eye-candy.

Besides, the vista buttons are not a must. Using the KDE Control Center, one can change every aspect of what it should look like in the "window decorations" section. Wink

http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=13969&vote=good&tan=94735637

Installation is simple:

- unpack the tarball
- open a terminal and enter the crystal theme directory
- ./configure --prefix=/opt/kde
- make
- su -c "make install"
