Any goodies on there for intel i915 users?
Yes, there are some.
Ok did an install directly from the iso using the vinstall-iso-ng script (im guessing the "ng" doesnt stand for new and great since i had to boot to my vl6 install to edit the fstab before it would boot

)
I created a new user, logged in with that uid and did a startx, screen freeze at xfce tips and tricks, this is the last bit of the Xorg :

Stock install of 2.1 no modifications other than the above mentioned edits to /etc/fstab to make it bootable.
Thank you all for your efforts. Im a huge VL fan and look forward to either getting the dev stuff i need to make this hardware work or getting a new video card, either way, i look forward to a solid stable install of VL2 soon.

EDIT: I suppose i should mention for the sake of completeness that im booting from lilo installed on /dev/hda to a 2.1 install located on /dev/sdb5 with this lilo entry and kernel commandline:
image = /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38.2
root = /dev/hdb5
label = linux-beta2-1
append = "root=/dev/sdb5 ro video=640x480"
