how to connect to internet with 3G+ usb dongle?
« on: March 24, 2011, 04:12:57 am »

Hi everybody,

I'm a newcomer on vectorlinux and I've just installed VL 6.0 Standard on my old laptop. It works fine. But now I want to connect to internet with my 3G+ usb dongle (ZTE CDMA2000 IX EV-DO) and I don't know how to do it. Has anyone got the same problem? And how can I fix it?

The hardware seems to be detected by VL and here is the output after doing a dmesg -c :

Code: [Select]
root:# dmesg -c
usb 3-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2
usb 3-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
usbcore: registered new interface driver usbserial
usbserial: USB Serial support registered for generic
usbcore: registered new interface driver usbserial_generic
usbserial: USB Serial Driver core
usbserial: USB Serial support registered for GSM modem (1-port)
option 3-2:1.0: GSM modem (1-port) converter detected
usb 3-2: GSM modem (1-port) converter now attached to ttyUSB0
option 3-2:1.1: GSM modem (1-port) converter detected
usb 3-2: GSM modem (1-port) converter now attached to ttyUSB1
option 3-2:1.2: GSM modem (1-port) converter detected
usb 3-2: GSM modem (1-port) converter now attached to ttyUSB2
usbcore: registered new interface driver option
option: USB Driver for GSM modems: v0.7.2

Thanks in advance,

Ngahbe

PS : In Ubuntu, it works just fine using networkmanager but with VL 6 I dont know which program to use.

Does this device act as a dial-up modem? If so, chestnut or wvdial will do this for you.

I have a USB wireless device(cell phone), but it acts as an ethernet card. When plugged in, my device shows up as eth1 or eth0 and behaves like a normal ethernet interface.

try this in a terminal as root after the device has been  plugged in
Code: [Select]
ifconfig usb0 up
dhcpcd usb0

I think it acts like a dial-up modem and I've tried chestnut but it didn't work. I don't know where to put the APN option given by my ISP.

Plug in the dongle and provide the output of lsusb

I don't think there's a program in VL6 that will allow connecting to a cell provider. Network Manager provides for this ability, but it's currently in testing on VL7.1 (may want to give it a shot).

Here's the ouput of lsusb :

Code: [Select]
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 19d2:0042 ONDA Communication S.p.A.

I've already switched to VL7 and I think I'll install Network Manager.
