Every now and then the (empty) CDrom tray on my IBM T2 decides to pop open. I think it may be haunted. I close it and then 10 or 20 minutes later, for no good reason, it pops open again. I have tried to notice a pattern, but best I can tell, there is none. Has a mind of its own.
Any suggestions? (Prayer doesn't work).

You could try running a Live OS and see if it does the same thing. Either run it from a USB stick, or with a "toram" option so the CDROM is not locked.

There is an eject command in /usr/bin and/or /usr/local/bin. May be that is being triggered somehow. Try to make it non-executable and hope and pray if it stops.

I have the opposite problem on one of my P3 machines. The darn thing won't open most of the time. I have to use an un-rolled paperclip in that "manual" tiny little hole under the tray. Gremlins in the machines, I tell you!

I had trouble running a live OS. Probably a bad CD as I carry them around in my briefcase.
Eject on my system in in /usr/bin. I changed group and others from "read only" to "none." Perhaps that will help. It (eject) still works though from the non-root (and root) command line. It hasn't popped open in the last few minutes. Too early to mark thread solved, but thanks to all for the suggestions.

Popped open about a minute after last post. Changed permissions to root "read only." Also, though I had blown out the drive when this first started happening, this time I cleaned it (the inside edges) with a paperclip.
Who knows. Will report.

Before getting rm-r's post, I reinstalled cdrecord and kb3 and the various tools (cdrkit and cdrtools) and used the default k3bsetup.
It hasn't popped open for a few hours.

Its been quite a while now, and the cdrom drive is no longer popping open. I have done nothing else. Something (I am not too sure what) I did must have fixed it. So I marked it solved. Thanks to all for your help.
