Change folder permissions - SOLVED
« on: May 18, 2011, 11:57:26 am »

OK I searched the forums first, can't find anything.
Question I've copied from my backup into my home all my folders and files but I need to change their permissions.
Could somebody tell me how?
IN STEP by STEP as I'm a bit of a dummy ;D

you didn't say change them to what. How did you copy the stuff? using the command line as root or as user? using a GUI file manager?

I was using Mandriva and I copied them using Parted Magic
The permissions are set to "Root"
I need to change them to user

Parted Magic is a distribution with several tools, so the question of how the files were copied is still unanswered.
At any rate, the easiest way would probably be to launch thunar as root and right-click the folder containing the stuff you moved and go to the permissions tab and adjust them as needed.

The hard way....
Code: [Select]
man chown
Code: [Select]
man chmod
Code: [Select]
man chgrp
