OK. Everything, config, mixer, the audio grahs in xmms all say that ALSA is up and running. Trouble is headphones, speakers. No sound. I've got volume up on everything, but absoluely no hint of audio anywhere.

ALSA config says I have an 82801G Intel (ich7) family High Definition Audio chipset.

Ideas here?

I don't know which version of the kernel you're using, but an upgrade to the latest stable version possible might help. If not, see this previous post:

For up-to-date details about this really super alternative, see:

I've been using OSS, Version 4, for more than 2 years now, and I wouldn't take a chance on going back to ALSA for love or money. It's probably not for everyone, but it sure did (and continues to do) the job for me.

Do you have anything plugged in that might be detected as a soundcard. i.e. webcam, usb-microphone, maybe enven usb speaker.
When you start alsamixer at the command line and press f6 what shows as 0 your default soundcard?

Strange. I'd had the laptop off for several hours. Booted up. Sound worked.

Only thing i did was upgrade firefox to 3.6. The rest is oughly stock.
