Yep. Grub legacy doesn't handle a lot of things and really shouldn't be used.

As for not editing grub.cfg, I do it all the time. Since I've slowed down a lot on playing with various distributions, and the only time things get changed now is when there's a new version of Vector, I don't see the harm in making a direct edit to the configuration filee.
