"sed" Program Problem
« on: June 16, 2011, 07:34:37 pm »

Anyone knows about "sed"?

Well I have a little progam called Steak which just on a terminal will translate
from English to German and vice-versa. I have used it for a long time, however,
now in VL7 it will not work any longer.  And the problem seems to be the new
sed version 4.2.1.

If I enter a word for translation in VL7 I get:

steak milk
sed: file /usr/local/Steak/iso2txt line 3: unterminated `s' command
sed: file /usr/local/Steak/iso2txt line 3: unterminated `s' command

Please enter a word if you use this program.

The file iso2txt looks like this:
#!/usr/bin/sed -f

s/./ae/g
s/./Ae/g
s/./oe/g
s/./Oe/g
s/./ue/g
s/./Ue/g
s/./ss/g

If I copy the old version of sed-4.1.5 to VL7 the programm runs again.

Is there a way to adjust file iso2txt that 'steak' will run with the new sed version?

Until you find your answer you can try Ding from the repositories.  Ding is a dictionary lookup program.  It comes with a German-English dictionary with about 185,000 entries.

I will check this out, thanks. Looks like a more modern version of steak.
The beauty of those programs is that they are fast since no need to open
a browser and then a website and then, and then......

http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/veclinux-7.0/source/testing/xap/ding cannot be found.

In the meantime I copied sed-4.1.5 of VL6 to /usr/local/sbin, changed
accordingly in the steak program sed to /usr/local/sbin/sed and the good
old steak tastes like freshly grilled. ;D

Try http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/veclinux-7.0/source/abs/xap/ding/

That's the location of the source fwiw. ding txz itself is in testing and can be installed via gslapt.
