Thanks, that did it.

I tried
synclient touchpadoff=0

 that didn't do anything - d'oh

Then I tried

synclient touchpadoff=1

that did the trick.

Thanks roarde and nightflier, I really appreciate your help.

I'd still love to see a simple equivalent to "touchpad toggle" in Vector 7.

which raises the question - will VL7 still work on geriatric hardware, or will it need more advanced hardware?

VL6 is about the only distro I've found that both does what I want, and works at reasonable speed on this celeron 800 with 192 Mb ram.

Nice work, gizmo  Smiley
Now that you have synclient working, there are a lot more things you can do with it if you want to experiment.
To disable touchpad entirely: add the line:
Code:
Option        "TouchpadOff"        "1"
To the Touchpad section in xorg.conf.

Here is a quick script that you can use to toggle your pad:
Code:
#!/bin/sh
#
# toggle touchpad on or off

tpstatus=$(synclient -l | grep TouchpadOff | awk '{print $3}')
if [ $tpstatus = 0 ];then $(synclient TouchpadOff=1);else $(synclient TouchpadOff=0);fi
Copy the code to a file of your choosing and make it executable.

A script like this will be included in VL7, and yes, it should work on your machine.
