PalTalk and Adobe Flash Player
« on: August 10, 2011, 05:52:01 am »
I used to be able to access PalTalk Express (http://express.paltalk.com) using Vector Deluxe 6.0, Firefox and the latest Adobe Flash Player. However, for the past few months Flash doesn't work and I keep getting error messages to download the latest Adobe Flash Player. When I do get to the login page of PalTalk Express and enter my password, I receive an error message, "The Adobe Flash Plugin has crashed, please send a report . . ." Any idea what could be the problem? I've downloaded and installed Flash a kazilllion times.

I sometimes get this PalTalk error message which doesn't make any sense:

"Instance Error Uh-oh. There was an attempt to run more than one instance of paltalk Express on your computer. At this time we allow only a single instance of paltalk Express per computer. Check your browser and close all instances of paltalk Express and try again."

Since VL6 is a 2 year old distro I would recommend you to install the latest flashplayer plugin from http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/.
Download the tarball version and untar the libflashplayer.so file to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/.
Remember to backup the old libflashplayer.so before upgrading...  ;D

Yes, I've downloaded and installed the latest flash many times. The problem persists.

Here it's VL 6 Light, Firefox 3.6.18, and Flash Player 10.3.183.5.

Visited PalTalk Express and got as far as "sign up" with no problems before leaving voluntarily. Didn't like the privacy policy.

Deluxe (Standard or SOHO) includes KDE 4. I have to wonder whether Flash Player isn't trying to use the KDE 4 versions of its player, etc. rather than what's in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins. I took a look at the Flash Player tarball, and there's KDE 4 stuff there. I untarred it directly to / (except for putting libflashplayer.so manually where it's needed) and didn't experience any problems except that "properties" doesn't like and can't use the GTK that comes with Light.

You might try installing the whole tarball (except libflashplayer.so to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins), but back up existing files 'cos unlike me, you may already have something there.

As a reminder, "real" version check at http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/.

What version of firefox you are using?

I recently reinstalled my VL 6.0 Standard so I am currently using Firefox 3.0.6. At the time of this original post I was using Firefox 3.6.18 and Flash Player 10.3.183.5

I have a slow DSL connection. Perhaps this is the problem.
