Working on that. After making myself use K4 for a week, I'm starting to find my way around it. It is still unfamiliar territory. Kinda peaceful though.. nothing happens quickly. I have time to go start the coffee pot between pushing the power button and the desktop settling down. Things slide, or fade, in and out. Lots of informational bubbles floating around, usually covering what I thought I wanted to see. The hdd light shows continuous background activity, assuring me that I get good use out of the computing power I paid for... nice chill pill.

Next step was to try on a very minimal install, unchecking everything except X11. Even after 545 MB of downloads and 1.7G installed, there are obviously some pieces missing, as I only get a terminal window. Gonna try to come up with a list of what it takes to make a full desktop.

Posting from it now. Got it running simply by typing "startkde" in the terminal. Looks like it needs the configuration files which are included in the full install of Std.

Looks like KDM is the issue, I remember there was a mention about it earlier.
Installed and switched to GDM, now everything loads properly.

You lost me here. You install kde via the meta file or individually?
what is the issue with kdm again?

My original, minimal install used XDM. After installing this meta package, KDM was present.

KDM issue as mentioned here: http://forum.vectorlinux.com/index.php?topic=14833.msg85490#msg85490
Funny thing though.. when I installed over Light A5, KDM was working okay. I wiped that install but might try it again.

I see the problem now. I have build kde-workspace v2 to solve this issue but i can only find v1 in the repo. I will ask repo maintainer to check on that. Thank nightflier for testing it for me. Smiley
