« on: September 23, 2011, 08:15:01 pm »

Suddenly my sharp mebius laptop DVD drive can't read DVD, while can read cd data normally...i boot into windows and knoppix, problem remains stilll can't read DVD but cd no problem...
do this imply that DVD driver laser got aging problem and can't fix up unless raplcing a new ?
I did try opening the whole DVD drive case and made a thorough cleaning, but problem remains....

possible to  fix IT by updating the firmware of dvd drive ? any remedy linux command available to fix DVD drive ?

It is quite common for optical drives to lose their DVD ability while keeping their CD ability and vice versa. If it's happening in Windows and Knoppix, too, most likely the DVD part has died. I've never heard that anyone has been able to fix this on either a hardware or software level, but I can't claim to have heard everything out there.

For a laptop your best bet may be to buy an external USB CD-R/DVD drive, or better yet, a CD-R/DVD writer.
