Yeah, something is not right. You said you have numerous issues. Bummr.. what other things are not working? Maybe you should try VL7?

I had a similar experience. the easy solution was to unhide the essid in the router.
The other solution was to stop the wicd-client and daemon then edit the /etc/wicd/wireless-settings.conf and add the essid name. then reboot.

@nightflier.
Sorry. I am using Vec7. I changed to it after about the third post and at that point I was able to see my router.

edit the /etc/wicd/wireless-settings.conf and add the essid name
I checked and my essid name is in the file. The only thing I changed was the "hidden" property to "True"

I think I may have a lead on the problem
Connection attempts with Wicd always begin with
Code: [Select]
Disconecting active connectionsThe failed connection always ends with the message
Code: [Select]
Connection Failed: Bad password
If I try to connect maually:
Code: [Select]
iwconfig wlan0 essid xxxxx
iwconfig wlan0 mode Managed
iwconfig wlan0 channel Auto
iwconfig wlan0 ap any
Then check
Code: [Select]
iwconfig wlan0I get
Code: [Select]
# iwconfig wlan0
wlan0     IEEE 802.11bgn  ESSID:off/any
          Mode:Managed  Frequency:2.412 GHz  Access Point: Not-Associated
          Tx-Power=14 dBm
          Retry  long limit:7   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xx
          Power Management:off

The encryption key is active.
But if I run Wicd after the failed connection attempt iwconfig wlan0 always shows Encryption off!
The same thing happens if I try to connect manually with wpa_supplicant. Somehow my password is not getting passed to the router.

If I try
Code: [Select]
dhcpcd -t 25 -d wlan0Which will not connect with WPA the encryption key remains intact.

Also Is ifplugd deprecated in VL7? I don't have it and therefore no /etc/ifplugd/ifplug.conf. So therefore VLwifi does not work?

Have you tried setting your password in Wicd, as opposed to manually using wpa_supplicant?

VLWifi has been shelved in favor of Wicd. I'm not sure why.

To simplify things while debugging, I would try changing encryption method to wep or "open".  It is often recommended to get wifi fully setup "open" first and then implement restriction/encryption.

Yeah, I did that before trying wpa_supplicant.

I was trying to avoid that as there are 3 other computers on this network.

Everything works fine on an unprotected network. I am posting from the problem machine via WiFi right now.

So what should I be looking for to get it to work on a WPA2 encrypted network?

Yes I did try un-hiding my essid. No change.
I don't know if it makes any difference but this is a wireless N router.

Also I can get wlan0 connected via VASM but when I check the wireless status via VASM it always shows "Encryption off" even though I just set it on to get the connection.
Further even though it shows connected I can't use the internet.
