Error message is : Could not find ramdisk image: /isolinux/init.gz
md5sum is good and I used bootinst.sh to make a bootable USB. Looking on the drive init.gz doesn't appear to be in /isolinux.
thanks,

Look for init.lz. Then just rename it to init.gz and then try booting from the usb stick again.

I've copied /isolinux/init.lz to /syslinux/init.gz and /isolinux/initrd.lz to /syslinux/initrd.gz but I get the same error message.

OK , I've copied /isolinux/init.lz to /isolinux/init.gz and /isolinux/initrd.lz to /isolinux/initrd.gz and it has booted into the install menu. Thanks for the help.

Uh oh , more problems. Select monitor box pop up but whatever I select causes a few lines of text. The last reads "Logging in as root" then the screen goes black for five seconds and then the computer opens the cdrom then shuts down and reboots. I'm off to burn a CD.

However, VL7.0-Live works just fine from USB.

This is on my Debian machine :
root@chewbacca:~# vl-usb-install .: 8: Can't open /sbin/vasm-functions
I can try it on my VL box later ( although that's a bit chicken and egg ! ).

Script works well on a VL machine ( I'm typing this from a fresh USB install ). I played about with the script on Debian but there were just to many things missing check_root,Xdialog etc. Thanks again for the excellent help.

I had to perform the additional step of setting the boot flag of the USB stick in fdisk otherwise it all works fine.
