Thanks for the quick inclusion of alacarte into the testing repository. I have just finished the install of VL7 (using the INSTALL CD -- thanks stretchedthin, it worked like a dream  Grin). Adding alacarte immediately after install, I have discovered what appears to be a problem. When you enter a menu category, such as 'System', all the applications within that category are displayed in the right pane of alacarte. There are 'option buttons' along the far right edge. In the VL7 testing version those buttons read 'New Menu', 'New Item', 'New Separator', 'Move Up', and 'Move Down'. In the version I use on my other computers, using Linux Mint 11, there are two additional options: 'Properties', and 'Delete'. The 'Properties' option allows a user to alter the menu entry, the 'Delete' option -- obvious.

Both these options are pretty important in the overlay usability of alacarte. I activated alacarte as root, using the gksu command in the terminal, and then tried using the 'Properties' option. This is the printout I encountered:

Traceback (most recent call last):
     File "/usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/Alacarte/MainWindow.py", line 382, in on_edit_properties_activate process =     subprocess.Popen(['gnome-desktop-item-edit', file_path], env=os.environ)
     File "/usr/lib/python2.7/subprocess.py", line 679, in __init__errread, errwrite)
     File "/usr/lib/python2.7/subprocess.py", line 1228, in _execute_child raise child_exception
OSError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory

Sorry for all the trouble alacarte is causing you  Embarrassed. Hope the printout helps...
