How do I install a package for a wireless USB adapter on a PC with Vector Linux 7.0 that otherwise has NO internet access (I am posting this question from a Windows computer that does have wireless internet access)?
Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Thank you in Advance.

Do you know the name of the package that you want to install?
Or do you need assistance in discovering which drivers your network card uses?

Locater,
A couple of years ago I bought several usb wireless adapters which were linux compatible for about $10 each. If you want info re same let me know. Just plug them in. Nothing else needed.

The brand name on the adapter says Linksys, and I pugged it in to my Linux computer... and nothing happened (the model number is WUSB 1.1), and the package I tried to install is - linux_wlan_ng_0114_pre1_dr.tar.gz__. So what should I do now?

The easiest way for us to help you is to have you get us some precise information, using the command line. Assuming you are using VL 7.0 Standard: Find a terminal on the menu and open it. type "su" and press enter <enter your password> type "lsusb" and press enter use your mouse to highlight and copy the resulting text, and paste it into a reply. do the same thing for "lsmod" and "lspci"

I can't paste the resulting text into the reply because my linux computer has NO internet connection whatsoever (I said in my initial posting that I an using my Windows 7 computer for internet access).

Looks like your adapter is found and module loaded. In a terminal, as root, try command: "VLwifi" (it's case sensitive). Even if it does not work right away, take note of the name of the adapter. It may be "wlan0", "eth1", "ra0" or similar. Let's know what you find.

After trying the suggestions mentioned above, the end results were as follows - for VLwifi, the output was:
cat: /etc/wifi-radar/wifi-radar.conf: No such file or directory cp: cannot stat `/etc/wifi-radar/wifi-radar.conf': No such file or directory 2011-12-28 19:50:42: ERROR: Could not find Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection Invalid parameter 1: -.
after which I got a popup window that a wireless card could not be found (I have a wireless USB network adapter NOT a wireless network card).
Then I tried iwconfig -a and ifconfig -a, and got the following output:
root:# iwconfig -a -a No such device
vector:/~ root:# ifconfig -a eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:80:AD:7A:9E:82 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:16 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:16 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b) Interrupt:17 Base address:0xa000
lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:11872 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:11872 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:950144 (927.8 Kb) TX bytes:950144 (927.8 Kb)
So what else do you suggest?

it looks like you need the firmware from here: http://www.thekelleys.org.uk/atmel/atmel-firmware-1.3.tar.gzuntar it with "tar xvf atmel-firmware-1.3.tar.gz" then copy the firmware files to /lib/firmware/ as root "cp atmel-firmware-1.3/*/*bin /lib/firmware/" then reboot and iwconfig should show your wireless adapter.

I tried that, and got the following result:
root:# cp atml-firmware-1.3/*/*bin/lib/firmware/ cp: missing destination file operand after `atml-firmware-1.3/*/*bin/lib/firmware/' Try `cp --help' for more information.
