How do I go about installing packages that I've downloaded from the internet?

Assuming these are compatible packages for your OS, which for VL7 would have an extension of .tgz, .tlz or .txz:
In a terminal, as root, command "installpkg /path/to/package"

Suppose that the packages in question don't have any of those extensions, just "bz2" or "gz" - What then?

These packages sound like source packages which need to be compiled.

Might be able to answer better if you could provide the package name(s) and link(s).

The packages are fir two different software programs, one of them is for "DVDStyler" (DVDStyler-2.1.tar.bz2), and the other one is for "TVTime" (tvtime-1.0.2.tar.gz), both of which can be found by doing a Google search, if that is of any help.

@Locator

TVtime version 1.0.2 is in the gslapt repo's, so best to install from there.

dvdstyler is going to required many dependencies to run so installing the tar.gz or tar.bz2 is not going to be as
straightforward as installing that one package.

I'd suggest putting a request in for dvdstyler here... http://forum.vectorlinux.com/index.php?board=35.0

In the meantime, try mandvd, it's in the repo and can be used for the same purpose as dvdstyler.

Thank you. And while I am on the subject, I noticed that the version of Avidemux that they currently have is not up to date (the latest version is 2.5.6), and the one they have now is 2.5.4
