When i run the command VertEdgeScroll=1  the touchpad scrolls perfect actually better than my jogdial ever did. for those who don't know i have a sony vaio laptop with jogdial which i've been fighting with for over a month now....so... anyhow when i use these settings of synclient they work but don't save when i reboot, i also noticed i do not have the file  10-synaptics.conf in my X11, could someone direct me on how i could go about getting my laptop to remember these settings?

Also when i type xinput --list i get this:

root:# xinput --list
Virtual core pointer                       id=2   [master pointer  (3)]
Virtual core XTEST pointer                 id=4   [slave  pointer  (2)]
 SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad                 id=9   [slave  pointer  (2)]
Virtual core keyboard                      id=3   [master keyboard (2)]
Virtual core XTEST keyboard                id=5   [slave  keyboard (3)]
Sony Vaio Keys                             id=6   [slave  keyboard (3)]
Power Button                               id=7   [slave  keyboard (3)]
AT Translated Set 2 keyboard               id=8   [slave  keyboard (3)]

put your working configuration in a file like as you mentioned 10-synaptics.conf and save it in /etc/x11/xorg.conf.d/
everytime you reboot should be picked up from here. hope that helps.........:)

Cheers,

woohoo, solved it, I tried all that with my working file as you suggested and I couldn't get it to work, what i did was added synclient VertEdgeScroll=1 to my startup session, as well as in my rc.local file and it works!!! It's bout time. Lol. :D
