I hope someone can help me with this because it's very annoying. any video file i play is choppy, i tried vlc, and mplayer.
when i had windows installed all video worked flawlessly, i have an ati radeon -d 16mb video card, does anyone know what i can do to speed up the video? youtube, streams ok, albeit in 240, 360 is choppy.  Huh

Would you be willing to do an experiment and switch you session to fluxbox. I remember reading a forum post from someone saying their video improved when the were in fluxbox
Knowing if it works for you may help isolate the problem.

In sessions, fluxbox is there by default, I do not have choppy playback in xfce anymore but if anything fluxbox leaves a lighter footprint making stuff run faster so it should help.

OK, here's what happened, i ran a session in fluxbox, video ran perfectly smooth on most players, also ran a session with kde failsafe and just kde and video ran smooth also... i noticed when i ran htop before in xfce it was using 100 percent of my cpu but not in the other sessions, it was using more ram, the ram usage in xfce was very small but high in the others with lower cpu usage...could that be the problem....what about trying to lower cpu usage in xfce and if so how would i go about doing that? By the way thanks for everyones help so far...i'm learning little by little!! Smiley
