NVIDIA and the Kernel-driver in VL7 Std Gold...

OK,
So I installed VL7 Std Gold and all's fine on that screen before that hat of mine.
OK, creating a User-account during Install won't "stick" but that's easily remedied post-install.
I even got the proper resolution for my screen in one go and the scroll-wheel works too! (Woo-HOOH!...)
So; all's peach here.

Except.....
I want to install the NVIDIA-driver, to get that li'l extra speed out of it.

And the kernel-driver is in the way.

I did try to use the utillity, included in the NVIDIA-driver, but that sent my entire X-server *KAH-BLOOY!* and a quick re-install was in order.
Sure; I could get my hands dirty and restore the whole thing manually, but since I keep a tidy backup of my home-dir, re-install is quicker.

So, My question is:

How do I remove the kernel-driver properly, so NVIDIA doesn't barf up and installs properly?
I didn't have this problem in any of the previous versions.

Hi there, i installed the nvidia binary driver without problem, after i downloaded the file from nvidia website, i just rebooted my PC in TUI mode, ran the installer, it warned me that the nouveau driver was installed and both of them are incompatible and offered to blacklisting the nouveau driver for me, i accepted, then the installer failed because the recently blacklisted nouveau module was still loaded, so i rebooted in TUI mode again and ran the installer once more, it installed properly this time.

if the installer doesn't blacklist the nouveau driver for you, you can do it manually, just edit (or create if necessary) /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf an add the following line:

blacklist nouveau

note: after installing the nvidia propietary driver, my X server would not load, i just ran nvidia-xconfig and rebooted my PC and it worked.

I just make sure I switch to vesa drivers before attempting the nvidia driver install.

Now if you are using a live-cd install you will need to install the kernel-striped sources also before running the nvidia installer. (This is true for 64bit as well.)

And no: I NEVER install from a Live-distro for exactly THAT reason.

"nouveau" is a project to make high quality free software drivers for nvidia video-cards, it supports 3D acceleration and openGL, the old "nv" driver didn't have any 3D support, I installed the nvidia propietary driver before give a chance to nouveau, but had to go back to nouveau because nvidia driver did not detect right the resolution of my flat panel, now that i have tried nouveau i'm happy with it, tried compiz, it ran smoothly (just to test cause i don't really like compiz that much) and can play nexuiz and other 3D games just fine.

So, the NVIDIA-driver is installed and all works ok, except...
Opera.
While Youtube works ok, some other video-sites (Like Vimeo and Ongein.nl or the vid-section of Nu.nl) only provide sound, no video.
On some games-sites it won't show certain images in flash either.

They used to work ok previously on this install AND with the NVIDIA-driver on VL 6.0 Std Gold.

Already re-installed Opera, but no dice there...

I could understand it when the vids wouldn't show at all, but the fact they still play the sound AND the fact I don't have this problem in FF... makes me look at an Opera-NVIDIA-issue in combination with something missing/misplaced in VL....

Anyone any ideas?

OK.
Problem solved.

It turned out, I had colour-depth set at 16bits. Setting it at 24 bits solved the issue.

Still got me baffled though, how putting MORE strain on a system makes for less problems....

considering that i would be needing nvidia non-free drivers which of these packages can i remove safely because i want to remove unsed packages and make a custom live iso as small as possible

2 ) why cant/dont we have an xf86-video-nvidia-current package on repos so we can install nvidia driver directly from repos than installing it from nvidia site?? just wondering
