hibernate and suspend don't work
« on: March 04, 2012, 09:04:07 pm »

Hibernate and suspend don't work on my laptop (specs are below).  If I recall hibernate sort of worked for a while in one of the release candidate versions of VL 7 but it never worked right.  It has been suggested that I update the kernel.  However uelsk8s's How To Update Kernel (and stretchedthin's video) are, I believe, a bit dated for my system.  I updated the kernel a couple of years ago but don't recall how.

This (not being able to hibernate) is quite a bother and I would appreciate any input.

So you get the exact same behaviour from suspend as you do hibernate?    I do have trouble with hibernate as well, but since suspend works so well for me I have not looked that much into it.

P.S. I'll take a look at that video.
Another question.  Did you install Vector 7.0 Std from the live version or the standard install?

I just remembered.  I did have trouble with suspend while using the nouveau drivers for Nvidia.  Once I installed the proprietary drivers, suspend worked just fine.
If you want to try the upgrade to proprietary drivers try this tutorial here.

If your specs are the same as here, and you are running Vectorlinux Std 32bit and not 64bit, then this is the driver you want to download....here.

Edit, Well I just did as I advised and installed the nvidia proprietary drivers to my system and had the same problem, with suspend and hibernate.  Interestingly enough I am able to suspend on the same machine when it is booted to vl7.0 64bit

I'm now thinking that it was on the vl64bit install that the upgrade to nvidia proprietary drivers was what finally did the trick for me.  I'll see if I can duplicate the results on my new 32bit install.

I did the standard (not live) install.  I will check suspend now (again) and let you know when I get home, but last time I tried it it did exactly same as on hibernate, i.e. after hibernating, machine closes down.  I push the power button and get "resuming session" or some such, but it does a complete reboot instead.

I did "suspend" about half an hour/ 45 minutes ago.   Machine went quiet and screen blacked.

I just now pushed the start button and the screen painted as if all was OK.  But mouse was dead except on firefox...which I could toggle on and off.  After  a while Alt-F2 (run program) worked and I got to a terminal, where I typed (not as root) "exit -h 0".  Not sure what that does but it was suggested when I typed in terminal "logout -h 0").  Machine did not exit but mouse was freed and all programs are accessible (and work).  This is great!  I am not sure "exit -h 0" had anything to do with it.  Perhaps passage of time was all that was needed.

I will try this again tonight, when I retire.

Well,

I tried "suspend" again and eventually was able to get it to unsuspend.  Could not see a pattern.  Basically, mouse moves but clicking doesn't do anything.  Eventually (about 10 minutes) I could open a terminal and then eventually VL7 would work.

I tried "hibernate" again and it just doesn't work at all, best I can tell.  Pushing start button gives a "system resuming" notation, but still does a deep reboot.

You even had better results than me on my nvidia machine.  I have not had much time to play with it since I last posted, will see what I can find out before I go to work tomorrow.

Thanks.  No hurry.  Been this way a long time now.  I'm quite encouraged that suspend sort of works.  I might experiment with a couple of the xfce4 plugins on gslapt.
