help with vmware player(solved)

hi guys, im trying to get vmware player working on vl7 and followed the tuitorial on the how-to section but this is what the terminal says:


What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running
kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include]

The directory of kernel headers (version @@VMWARE@@ UTS_RELEASE) does not match
your running kernel (version 3.0..  Even if the module were to compile
successfully, it would not load into the running kernel.


then i ran vmware-any-any-update and i get this:

Unknown VMware version 4 is installed. This installer supports only version 2
and 3.

Execution aborted.

I first tried the newest release and i got the same errors so i downloaded version 2.0.0 thinking that would work and it said i uninstalled it successfully when i ran the installer but i'm obviously doing something wrong...can anyone help me out with this please and thank you

For what you are doing, do you absolutely need VMware or would virtualbox do just as well?

I know i'm late here, but fwiw, I think vbox is a much better and more widely supported virtualizing option.

you need to instal the kernel-src package for your kernel version

OK, so if you installed VL with the live cd, or you are using 64bit VL then your kernel source is not included in the install.

To find out what kernel you are running do ...
uname -r
in the terminal.
You can find the kernel stuff for vl7.0 Std gold (32bit) here

Most likely it is 3.0.8
If so from here download and install the kernel source....
http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/veclinux-7.0/kernels/3.0.8-1vl70/kernel-src-3.0.8-i686-1vl70.txz
Once downloaded just right click on the file and choose Install Package.

Then the tutorial should work for you.

ok, i did that with the kernel source file and installed the new package and rebooted and i get the same thing.....do i have to reinstall vmware player again? also i noticed when i took the kernels out of exclude from gslapt i have the headers installed but they are version 2.6 something....will that make a difference. Also, i'm running vl7 gold 32 bit so i had to get vmware player 3.0 because all the others i tried were saying i didn't have a 64 bit system even the newer ones that said they were for 32bit.  On the bright side of things virtual box works and was easy to install so if we can't figure vmware out it's no big deal other than the satisfaction of saying oh yes we can. lol. thanks again for helpin me so much

p.s.- what if i just totally update my kernel from 3.0.8 to the latest one?

The VMware player I used in the tutorial was "VMware-Player-4.0.2-591240.i386.bundle

I don'tt mess with GSlapt settings at all when installing kernel sources. So no experience there.

yeah, i didn't download anything as far as kernels go from gslapt, i did it thru the link you put here, but i was googling and found someone else with a similar problem and their kernel was newer than their headers and they thought that was the problem, so i just wanted to see what version headers i had compared to kernel. i  will be changing gslapt back to exclude them.....and i'll try and do a kernel update to the latest kernel released march 1, thru the tuitorial on here, i did it when i had vl6 installed first and it worked fine so i got nothing really to lose, worst case scenario i'll have to install vl7 again

ok, i upgraded my kernel to latest 3.2.9 and i still get the same thing when i try to run vmware player...where are the kernel-headers located in the system anyways?

When you install a new kernel you need to run as root.
vmware-modconfig --console --install-all

Searching for a solution for you I have tried vmware  on a fresh install of vl7.0soho which uses the 3.2.6 kernel, and can tell you you are going to run into problems, even if you get all of you kernel header issues sorted out.

You will most likely encounter a problem with the networking module and get an error that reads "Unable to install vmnet"

If you are willing to reinstall vl7.0 using the install cd, I just double tested and I can confirm the tutorial works.  I even installed vl-light inside the vmware virtual machine and I can tell you what your next problem will be if you go that route.  No internet connection for the virtual OS.  (This may be because I am using wireless internet and a wired system may get a different result, I don't know.)
edit.  Just installed vl7.0std32bit in vmware installed with 3.0.8 kernel.  Did not have any problem with internet, but for some reason I had to use the text installer mode as the gui installer would just fail.

The magic combination for the tutorial seems to be ...
1) Your Vectorlinux system must be installed via the "Install CD" and not the "Live CD"
2) Stick with kernel 3.0.8
3) Follow the installation tips from the tutorial.
4) Start the hal daemon (hald as root) before starting vmplayer


Bet, virtualbox is sounding pretty good right now.

I was going to advice "just go with VirtualBox" but i can understand you, i´m like that myself, right now i have a few nights without sleep, trying to figure out how to make anyRemote to work with my PC and my phone so i can control Multimedia via Bluetooth to see movies and hear music without moving from my bed =D
