Repos in disarray in VectorLinux Light
« on: March 29, 2012, 08:36:57 am »

VectorLinux Light got a good review here:

http://www.zdnet.co.uk/blogs/jamies-mostly-linux-stuff-10006480/gimme-a-light-linux-from-vector-70-10025728/

So I thought - well - never ever did I even look at slackware - THE historic distro.

It installed well enough - text installer or not.  So exiting are the times when you go to gslapt and have a look at the packages.  Update and have a look....

It looks the repos are in disarray .... I wanted to install Thunar ... not there.  thunar-volman is .... but what does that help without Thunar.  So it went with other packages ....

So I went into the Irc channel to confirm what I feared - members confirmed that the repos are in a serious state of disarray and can not be used in earnest.  I will not open an account at ZDNet to write a response to that review which obviously only went scratch deep - but I certainly would like the folks here to know here that things are not as they should be so they are prepared for it.

No train smash for me - I was just curious and wanted to see what a slackware based distro looks like and how it performs, especially on older hardware.

I am sure you guys will get that fixed and as soon as you have I'll have another go.  Still want to test a slackware based distro ...

Good luck with all your endeavours.

Regards

Every txz file that  is on the vl install ISO is in the repo. I will have a look, but I suspect that thunar is somehow included in XFCE.

Thanks for the prompt reply.  No need to rush - I'll find something else to do in the meantime ...

I have Thunar installed on many an installation - somehow I like that file manager.  Most of them are not xfce installs.

I ran less against the xfce-4.8 txz file and confirmed, Thunar is in that package.

See the results of /usr/bin/ contents below.

I see.  Thanks for checking.

Does that mean in order to be able to install Thunar I need to install the entire xfce desktop environment?
