I was able to upgrade Firefox by:

  • Downloading a binary http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
  • Renaming the original firefox folder (just in case).
  • Unpacking the binary and copying it to a new firefox folder in the /usr/lib directory.
  • Restart the computer.

The old links should point to the correct location and existing menu links should work.

This may not be the best way but it worked for me.

Yup, there are several ways.  ;D  We had another thread about this a while ago:

Thanks for the replies, VL classic has been working so well that I spend very little time on the forums.  I have booted Vl 7 & VL7 light, but I really enjoy the Classic de. I have earlier versions of FF and Seamonky installed, but have become concerned about all of the browser updates.  I can run Puppy on the data partition of the same hdd and have been able to update the browsers on Puppy..  I will have to study those responses to see If I can do that. I have been able to install Seamonkey in Mepis 8, but no previous Seamonkey was installed.and it has not been updated. Thanks for a great os, everything I have seen so far seems to work well.
