nvidia driver won't install in VL7 x64 (RC2)
« on: May 16, 2012, 12:07:03 pm »

Attempts to install the latest nvidia driver(s) results in a message that states "Unable to find the kernel source tree for the currently running kernel ..." I am using VESA video drivers.

Applying the --kernel-source-path option to the install  command did not help.

I have a multi-boot system (Windows XP x64, Ubuntu Server x64, Linux Mint 12 x64 and Vector Linux x64). Grub controls the boot process and was loaded from the Linux Mint installation.

Extensive searching on google has proven fruitless. Suggestions on installing the nvidia driver(s)? Thank in advance.

You need to install the kernel sources first. Use gslapt, search for "kernel-src" and install the one that matches your kernel.

The only items Gslapt shows as having kernel in their name are: 1) kernel, 2) kernel-headers, and 3) kernel-modules. Gslapt also says that all three are already installed (and locked).  Suggestions?

I noticed too that there werent any sources in gslapt for the 3.1.10 kernel.
I dont know how comfortable you might be with compiling your own kernel, make backups of your /etc/lilo.conf and /boot dir before you try it, but im running kernel 3.3.5 on vl7-64 rc2 and its worth the effort. I ended up with a smaller and (subjectively anyway) faster kernel.

@gkeller

We do not keep kernel sources in gslapt.

In a terminal type
uname -r
This will output your kernel version.

Then go here...
http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/VL64-7.0/kernels/

Then enter the folder that matches up to your kernel version
Download the kernel-src or kernel-stripped-src (kernel-stripped-src should do and is considerably lighter.)
install the file by right clicking on it and selecting install package  (as long as your using the Thunar file manager.)

Try to install the nvidia drivers again.
Sounds like your ok with that but try this video.
