I recently installed Vector Linux 7 to an HP HDX-X18 laptop. At first it did all that was required but a few days ago, sound was lost on Skype and on YouTube but mplayer renders it from clips OK.

Possibly related are my unsuccessful attempts to drive my LCD Television via an HDMI lead. The initial sign-on from the flash screen renders perfectly but when the desktop emerges it shows an xfce desktop overlaying the Vector Linux one and only the xfce bit occupies the TV screen. I have never managed to drive sound through to the TV both using VL7 and its Ubuntu 10.4 predecessor.

Am I baying at the moon?

I have now moved on from there and left  with only one problem.

The microphone is built-in. When I try to do a Skype test call, it switches off the mic!
What could be causing that?
