Live CD password unknown to complete printer setup

I have just moved from Windows 7 and started with Vector Linux and want to use the Live CD in conjunction with DreamLinux (which is on my hard drive).

The reason for this combination is because I use graphics and DreamLinux will not load Inkscape with my old processor. Vector Linux Live CD however opens Inkscape no problem and of course will easily install sK1 for converting CorelDraw cdr files and working with vector graphics. I would like to use VL completely but it also has its problems with my processor when using Firefox. At the moment it is stable with version 9.0.1 but crashes all the time with other versions.

However my problem is this.
Setup a new printer ...
The system will recognize the username and password used to start the process...
but the system will not recognize the same authentication to complete the process.

Open Settings / Printing / Add  ......
Password for root on localhost ....
Username is vl
Password is (none required - just hit return)
Enter Device URL ... localhost:631
Forward / Searching for driver .... finds
HP / Laserjet 5P
Select driver ... HP Laserjet 5P - CUPS + Gutenprint v5.2.6 [en] recommended
Forward / Apply
Asks for authentication ....
Password for root on localhost .... (use the same username & password as before)
Username is vl
Password is (none required - just hit return)
Message - Not authorized. The password may be incorrect.
Have to abort the process and cannot setup the printer.

Why do I have to authorize the completion of the process when I have already logged in as root and why will it then not recognize the same username and password to finalize the process?

CUPS will not accept a blank passwords. Create passwords and try again. Use "root" to configure cups.

Thank you nightflier for your prompt reply. Unfortunately I do not yet have sufficient grasp of Linux and do not know how to set up a new root password (see below) or even know how to configure cups in root, or even know why I would have to configure cups. Yes, I am that new!
What I had tried previously was this because it worked in DreamLinux.
Go into Terminal and enter 'sudo passwd root'
When I tried this the last time in VectorLinux I got the message ...
User vl is not allowed to execute ' /usr/bin/passwd root' as root on vector.live.lan

What is it that I am doing wrong? What do I have to configure in cups and why?

It is late here now so I shall have to sign off and pick it up in the morning.

Yeah, it can get a little confusing going from one system to another.
To change the password in VL, look for "VASM" on the menu.
Continue to "SUPER", then "USER", and "PASSROOT".

A generic method would be to open a terminal and use:

passwd
<follow prompts>

I followed your instructions and have changed the root password.
That seems like the easy bit. Configuring CUPS is next to near impossible. In fact I have given up trying to do it. Setting up a printer in VectorLinux is far too complicated.
I used the terminal to start with but it would not connect so I just copied the link into Firefox and opened up CUPS.

I got completely bogged down when it came to entering the unique URL. It said that it could be obtained from the printer control panel, the configuration or status page or even the test page. Not a lot of help when you haven't yet got the printer setup.
When I close LiveCD I will open up DreamLinux and investigate the printer setup there to see if I can find the URL and will report back if I have any luck.
It is a pity that VectorLinux make it so hard to setup a printer. DreamLinux on the other hand is so easy.
