automatically starting ntp.conf (SOLVED)
« on: June 27, 2012, 08:00:30 pm »

My computer's time drifts and after a week or six I am 5 minutes or so off.  I think I have /etc/ntp.conf configured OK but don't know how  to  start ntp.conf to try to correct this problem.   Nor what to add at the end of rc.local to start ntp automatically on boot.  Or even if I am on the right path here.  I think I used to do something in vasm>services, but don't see that now.

Any suggestions?  I don't need perfect time, but would like to stop the drifting.

I have been able to control the clock on virtual machines using this guide
 https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Network_Time_Protocol_daemon

For some reason our ntp package does not come with a working default configuration, but that guide will work.

Just dont focus on the daemon stuff.  Focus on the .conf contents and the "using whithout a daemon " section.  It has what you need to have in rc.local for the time to be fixed on boot.

This normally indicates your motherboard battery is weakening and thinking of dying. Might want to replace it.

1. copy this file https://projects.archlinux.org/svntogit/packages.git/tree/trunk/ntpd?h=packages/ntp to your /etc/rc.d/init.d
2. chmod 755 /etc/rc.d/init.d/ntpd
3. chown root:root /etc/rc.d/init.d/ntpd
4. after that you should be able to configure it under vasm>services
