Ratpoison is a simple Window Manager with no fat library dependencies, no fancy graphics, no window decorations, and no rodent dependence. It is largely modelled after GNU Screen which has done wonders in the virtual terminal market.

You do realize that the entire purpose of Ratpoison is to do away with the mouse? In other words, the learning curve for using it is very steep as you must relearn how to do everything via the keyboard.  This isn't something that would lend itself to the distribution or ease of use.

I get the feeling you're requesting packages just for the sake of requesting packages that aren't in the repo. As with your other request, there's absolutely no rhyme or reason to even do this.

I'm really touched by your concern, buddy, but in my case, i've been using rp for a while, here is my .ratpoisonrc:

Code:

alias term exec xterm
escape F13

exec xrdb -merge "$HOME"/.Xdefaults
warp off
startup_message off
set winname class
defborder 0
set padding 0 0 0 0
defbarpadding 0 0
exec xsetroot -solid black -cursor_name left_ptr
bind semicolon colon
set bargravity sw
set winfmt %n %s %t
set fgcolor yellow
set bgcolor black
set font "Terminus-12"

alias showroot exec ratpoison -c fdump; ratpoison -c 'select -' -c only
alias unshowroot exec ratpoison -c "frestore at $HOME/.rpfdump"

### Escritorios virtuales/Workspaces
exec rpws 1
exec /usr/bin/rpws init 6 -k

## bind = F13
bind F1 exec rpws 1
bind F2 exec rpws 2
bind F3 exec rpws 3

#Focus
bind J exchangedown
bind K exchangeup
bind L exchangeright
bind H exchangeleft

bind j focusdown
bind l focusright
bind h focusleft

##Alt-tab
definekey top M-Tab next
definekey top M-ISO_Left_Tab prev

### Atajos de teclas/Keybindings
bind e exec pcmanfm
bind f exec firefox
bind m exec sylpheed
bind u exec xchat
bind l exec leafpad
bind r restart
bind h exec sudo /sbin/halt -p
bind o exec sudo /sbin/shutdown -r now
bind w windows
bind space exec xterm
bind k kill
bind Escape abort
bind q only

## Las teclas de de la fila de arriba no precisan de bind (F13)
# Para lanzar un Run box/To launch a Run box (Ctrl+Space bar):
definekey top C-space exec

# Para hacer un screenshot/To make a screenshot (Press the Print key)
definekey top Print exec xterm -e scrot -cd 10

Now, why would i do that?
I'm a translator by profession, i like 'unclutter' because when i'm reading, the mouse pointer stays outta the way, making it easy to read.

As for rp, it's not bloated, i don't have to take my hands off the kbd to use the mouse, divides the screen horizontally so i can read on top and translate at the bottom.

What is the purpose of this sub-forum? To request packages that are useful to make your job easier.
Now, if you don't like it don't do it. What is more, eliminate the sub-forum.

Give us a list of packages YOU like and we could choose, instead of specultating as to the reasons the user has to petition a package.

Both of these packages are very small; it's not like i'm requesting Gnome or KDE.

People like you alienate new users, and that's no good for Vector Linux one bit!

macondo,

Thinking I would give ratpoison a try, I installed it from slackbuilds.org but I have no clue how to run it.  I changed the xwindow manager in vasm to ratpoison but nothing happened.  Not remembering what was my default xwindow manager, I went to d.  No change there either.

How do you run ratpoison?

Macondo,

When some of us look at posts we look at the post count
as a reference. Seeing that the request makes sense to
keep people from shooting themselves in the foot.

Almost all new users are looking for a full functioning gui.
Again the reason for the question and warning.

There are times like yours where that system fails.

Your last request was for a program that removes the cursor
after time. Which is why I asked why. It was not anything other
than learning.

Your explaination clears up the questions.

The responses were not to say no one will make the packages
you asked for.

I am more of a dwm person myself.

I built ratpoison last night and it is available in the testing repository.

Please let me know how it works for you.  If good I will move it to the regular "extra" repository.
Ken

Also, could you let me know if you tested on 32bit or 64bit.

Nice, ratpoison is my favorite WM after awesome-window-manager.
I tested here and its working fine. Thanks!

For those wanting to try it, Control-t and c will create a new xterm, then man ratpoison Smiley
Control-t and s will split the window, and you can switch with Control-t and tab. Its hard, but rewarding Smiley

OK, i don't know VASM yet, i'm a newbie to VL, i don't think rp works with a DM, what i do is i edit .xinitrc and leave it like this:

Code:
#!/bin/sh

setxkbmap -option terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp
xsetroot -solid black
xrdb -merge .Xdefaults
unclutter -idle 2 &
numlockx &

#exec icewm
#exec jwm
exec ratpoison
Save/exit/startx and you're in like Flynn!

With the first line i can get out of the X system (log off)
Next, my background is black no screensaver (saves ram on my toy box)
Next, i want my terminal to be the way i like it.
Next, the mouse cursor will disappear after 2 seconds and appear back when i move the mouse.
The numlock pad will be activated the moment i enter the X system.
Finally, rp will appear on the screen.

Rp looks pretty bad at first, the best thing is to CONFIGURE it from the wm you are in now. I'm going to write a quick howto and PM you, no sense reinventing the wheel. I'll do it today, rp is worth it if your needs are like mine. You can still use the mouse normally if you desire. Combine it with Vimperator in Firefox and it's unstopbable.

@Sledgehammer

If you install the one I just built from testing, I set it up so that when you log off it will be a choice in GDM's sessions menu.  Just select it and go.
Also, look at rbistolfi's tips in this thread.

OK, ratpoison and unclutter seem to work for me on 64bit as well.

Guess I'll spend a little time in ratpoison myself.  Working in this kind of desktop environment can really add to a guys geek cred. :-)
