Author Topic: Videos No Longer Play [SOLVED]  (Read 2523 times)

« on: August 25, 2012, 11:37:25 am »

Hi All,
I have VL 7.0 light and no videos on any browser will play.  It appears to download into the cached but then the status bar flickers between playing and stopping.  I used the embedded video viewer in Opera, Chrome, and Firefox to know resolution.  The UMPlayer no loner plays as well.

I have tried re-installing UMplayer with no luck.  I'm made sure that all packages have been updated as well.

Where should I look next?

Regards,
Dan

This maybe part of the issue.

Try this as root in the terminal

ln -s /usr/lib/libvpx.so /usr/lib/libvpx.so.0

I think you may have upgraded libvpx past the version it was built against.  I recreated the same error you got by upgrading libvpx on it's own.

I could not play the link in you example, however, I think perhaps because the link just points to a directory and not a specific file.

stretch,
thanks for your help, I followed your lead and read through the log file and it turned out that I needed to downgrade libvpx.  Don't know how this happened but once done videos are not playing.

Dan

Thanks.  Your instruction to create a soft-link helped with a whole bunch of issues I was having with various programs.  I would run programs in the terminal and get a similar error message about some lib file not being found ("libsomething.so.a number:  No such file or directory").  So, I would create a link to the base of the named file (sans the last number) and it would work.

@MarkGrieveson
Glad the soft links are helping.  However, better if they were not needed.  Do you remember some that you had and I can try and track down the source of the problem.

It was a while ago.  dvdstyler was one, but I think you solved that issue recently with an upgrade.  I'll go though my /usr/lib directory, and see what I can find.

Thanks, if you have the time to find what it was that's great, or just keep it in mind for what you find in the future.

I think I'll have to keep it in mind for the future, since there are oodles of links in my /usr/lib directory.  If I could figure out how to sort by permission status, then I might be able to quickly generate a list of the links there, but, alas, I've not been able to figure out how to do this.  I'm not sure if that would be useful to you anyway, since I have installed a few Slackware packages, which may have thrown a few things off.

Regarding links that I had to create, just now I found that Inkscape wasn't working, so I had to create links for it to work:

Code:
vector:/~
mark:$ inkscape
inkscape: error while loading shared libraries: libMagick++.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
vector:/~
mark:$ locate libMagick++.so
locate: warning: database /var/lib/slocate/slocate.db' is more than 8 days old
/usr/lib/libMagick++.so
/usr/lib/libMagick++.so.5
/usr/lib/libMagick++.so.5.0.0
vector:/~
mark:$ su
Password:

Network tools  : ifconfig, host, ping, nmap, iptables
File manager   : mc (press F2 for useful menu)
Editor         : mcedit, nano, vi
Multimedia     : alsamixer, play
vector://home/mark
root:# ln -s /usr/lib/libMagick++.so.5 /usr/lib/libMagick++.so.4
vector://home/mark
root:# exit
exit
vector:/~
mark:$ inkscape
inkscape: error while loading shared libraries: libMagickWand.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
vector:/~

It did work after creating these two links.

Looks like you upgraded Imagemagick.  Two questions. What version of Imagemagick are you running now and do you have testing enabled.

I do not have testing enabled.  I have ImageMagick version 6.7.4_9-i586-1vl70 installed.  The source for this package is reported as being http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/veclinux-7.0/extra/.
