VL 7.0 GOLD and floppy drive management
« on: August 31, 2012, 08:50:02 am »

Hello,
I've just installed VL 7.0 GOLD (very nice!) but noticed that the floppy drive is unusable. Certainly its driver was not installed.
Is it possible to fix this problem?
Best Regards

Hello,
In the meantime I had a look to /lib/udev/ and noticed that there is a file named "create_floppy_devices". Does have that file a relationship with the floppy drive recognition? Is its purpose to prepare rules for it? (unfortunately I am an absolute beginner in these things).

Why do you say the driver is not installed?

Can you describe what exactly is not happening vs
it is not working?

Is this floppy drive internal or external?

A floppy drive does not auto mount. You need
to mount the drive which probably is /dev/fd0
in order to access it.

Hello,
When I insert a floppy disc into the floppy drive I would expect to see it displayed on the left pane of Thunar file manager, so that I can mount it, but all that does not happen (nothing happens).
If I go to the directory /dev I notice that there is a folder named "fd" that links to /proc/self/fd and that this folder has a padlock on its right side and, if I try to open it this message appears: Failed to open directory "fd" Error stating file'/dev/fd/25/'
Here you have a partial result of the terminal command about that:

vector://dev
alberto:$ ls -l
total 0

I forgot to say that it is an internal floppy drive.

Hello,
In the meantime, somebody gave me the suggestion to mount the floppy like that:
#udisks --mount /dev/fd0
I tried and this works (mounting fd0 at /mnt/floppy).
I wonder if there is a way to make the file manager Thunar do the same (avoiding you to use the terminal).

Figured a screenshot is worth a thousand words.

http://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?id=6183

My setup below. Screenshot is of a PLOP boot manager floppy disk of mine. I dragged and dropped /mnt/floppy to r/h panel in thunar for shortcut.

Edit:
Quote
Certainly its driver was not installed.
Floppy drive is handled in /etc/fstab. I know because I checked that first.

2nd Edit: Well. The files stay in there when I eject the floppy in /mnt/floppy. I tried configuring a thunar custom action with the
Code: [Select]
udisks --unmount /dev/fd0 command but that did not help. The only way for them to go away is with a reboot with floppy disk pulled. I am still gonna have to trouble shoot that one so that the folder empties when disk is pulled out.

Thanks a lot.
At last I did a similar thing configuring two custom actions (Thunar > Edit > Configure custom actions): One for mounting and one for unmounting the floppy disc (udisks --mount /dev/fd0 and udisks --unmount /dev/fd0).
