Simple image resizing software please.

Can anyone out there recommend a simple program to me that will enable me to resize pictures?

Imagemagick is a great suggestion.
Try this at the command line.
convert ./any.jpg -resize 50% ./newany.jpg    (substitute a real picture name of course)
or
convert ./any.jpg -resize 409600@ ./newany.jpg

The first one shrinks the picture 50% and safes the altered picture to a new file.
The second one creates a new picture made of exactly 409600 pixels or about 119.5kb.  You can of course alter 409600 to a number of your choosing.

Combine that with this tutorial on thunar custom actions http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leGcvwekWvI
and you can start shrinking any picture with just a right click.
Hint.. Create a custom action with this command...
convert %f -resize 409600@ %d/newone.jpg
and give it an Appearance Condition of Image Files.

Alternatively.
Imagemagick has a gui front end if it makes it easier.  It's not in the menu, but you can launch it by just typing display in the terminal.

Using GIMP,
After image is open, simply click IMAGE from the toolbar, select SCALE IMAGE from the dropdown.
Set to your desired size, click SCALE button
Go back to FILE, select SAVE or you can use EXPORT...

late in posting but for future reference
If you like the Geeqie image viewer you can add imagemagick to the external editors menu

simply click edit/preferences/configure editors

click new at the bottom of the dialog box

In the window find
 Name=template and replace template with imagemagick
In the window next find
 exec=command %f and replace command with display

(you can rename the new.desktop to imagemagick if you like)
save and close

this should offer a simple editor for images in addition to gimp depending on your project
 simple right click the image and make your choice from the edit menu
(your image will open in a new window left click it to see the edit menu)
