I followed the "update Your NVidia Driver" video on
www.opensourcebistro.com. (I have a Macbook Pro with an 8600GTM). During the install it said I was using the nouveau driver and it would need to be disabled for the install to finish. Anyway I went along clicking "OK" and at the end it said "Installation Failed".
After that the system will almost boot but then hang where it says it can't find a screen and the cursor vanishes so I can't enter commands.
I used Puppy Linux to allow me to access the hard drive and there is a nvidia-installer-disable-noveau.conf in the modprobe.d which says:
# generated by nvidia-installer
blacklist nouveau
options nouveau modeset=0
Do I change something in this file, delete it or what? I just want to get back to using the nouveau driver at this point.
You just need to change to the vesa driver.
You can do this by using vxconf at the command line as root.
I have a video that gives a bit of a run down on vxconf. It shows how you can use vxconf when your X system is bricked.

Once you have set up as VESA you just log out and log in again, or reboot, and follow the NVidia again.
