Is there a spellcheck in Geany?  Or one that can be set up?

yes. it is a plug in that uses the enchant lib. I do not think it is in the plugin package but you can get the geany package here
http://geany-plugins.sourceforge.net/downloads.html

after extracting the package you can install via ./configure make and as root make install in a terminal
it should increase the available plugins and include a spell checker..check the box in the tools/plugins manager and restart geany
