Admin rights

New to VL.

Trying to make permanent changes to the synaptic driver settings but have no file access in etc/X11 etc, or anywhere for that matter !!

Can someone help me?

It would help to know which Vector Linux version you're attempting to use.

It's the latest version,  7 I think.  Don't know how to confirm that.

Used to Ubuntu...

Ubuntu uses sudo where VL does not. To edit system files you need to run as root.

However, to manipulate your touchpad, you can use the synclient utility. What do you get if you run the command "synclient -l" (small L) in a terminal?

On my system, I tell which version by running "cat /etc/vector-version" without the quotes in a terminal.

As to synaptics, I gave up on that long ago.  To gain control of my keyboard, I disable the touchpad (fn F10 on my system) and now use a wireless mouse. A lot better than a touchpad even when the touchpad works right.

And, welcome to Vector.  It is a very fast, stable system which puts you in control of everything, or just about.  Give it a chance and you will likely stay.

In a terminal type su , you will be prompted for your root password

the gsynaptics package I added to vl7l allows me to turn off tapping but is not permanant
