Hi, I am glad to see samba 4.0.0 coming out and it's available on gslapt for vl7.0 already. But as I tried to install it, and test it from a win7, it prompts user for password. I was looking if this was the generic case and I found this:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=690139
I guess it is indeed a generic bug, and we should update to the later version.
Thanks,
Ted

The best place to find where there is a problem
is by looking at the logs.

For Samba testparm is a great tool as well so
you can test your config file.

What authentication database did you use
smbpasswd or tbdsam?

Did you add the unix user password to that
database.

Are you using Domain or workgroup?

What version of Windows 7, be aware that Windows 7 home premium
can not authenticate to a domain.

my configuration file worked well with samba 3.7, is just when I upgrade to samba 4.0 it suddenly asks for admin password:
Code:
server:/~
ted:$ testparm /etc/samba/smb.conf
Load smb config files from /etc/samba/smb.conf

I am using windows 7 professional, plus my local net name is "server" not a domain. Using workgroup btw. I am not trying to password protect my directories, so I won't be using any authentication anyways.
Thanks,

There are sync and ack packets sent from
Windows 7 Pro. These packets require a response.

Did you update you update the tbm to include the
user ted?

If you did not add ted then you can not login into
the share.

According to the docs tbd tends to corrupt and
suggests that you backup that file on a regular
basis.

The server name has nothing to do with a domain.

Also look at the logs. They will point you in the
right direction.

I also tried using win XP to access the samba 4 shares, it also asks me for a password to localhost.localdomain.com. I am using workgroup not domain. Despite I dont know what tbd is, but I am not convinced that when I upgrade to samba 4 it suddenly becomes corrupted and when I downgrade to samba 3.67 it recovers itself all a sudden. Here is the log:

Samba 4 is a new write of Samba 3. That is why the
config is wrong.

The warning about security = share is the problem.

Also the guest mapping is off.

Let me google that for you:
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=samba+4+Warning+security+%3D+share

Try the first hit.
