« on: March 21, 2013, 09:06:14 am »
I have tried to scan an external hard drive using the "Disk Utility" (found in the "System" sub menu) and the following window pops up:

Is the drive mounted? I just plugged mine in, did not mount it, and it scanned fine.

The drive in question is a USB drive - and yes, it is mounted.

You can't check a drive that's mounted. Unmount it.

I did what you suggested, and in less then a second (not nearly enough time for it to have scanned my external hard drive, I might add), the following window popped up

You'll want to use fsck.vfat to check the drive.

Thank you. Now, how do I tell it to scan my external USB hard drive (what comes up when I type that is as follows) -

DOSFSCK(8)                                    check and repair MS-DOS filesystems                                    DOSFSCK(8)

NAME
dosfsck - check and repair MS-DOS filesystems

SYNOPSIS
       dosfsck|fsck.msdos|fsck.vfat [-aAflnrtvVwy] [-d PATH -d ...] [-u PATH -u ...] DEVICE

Now then - what do I put in for "DEVICE"?

How would you normally navigate to the device? When I plug my drive in, it shows as /dev/sdc

I do it by using the "File Manager" program.

Open a console and as root type:

tail -f /var/log/messages

Now plug in your device. Then you can which device you
have.
