I installed VL64-7.1-STD-B0.42.iso for testing on two 5 to 7 year old early dual core AMD boxes --

1. Gateway GT-5228 AMD 64x2 3800+ (2g ram 500g disk)
2. Dell E521 AMD 64x2 4200+ (2g ram 160g disk)

Results -- installed using Text Installer as the GUI didn't recognize the video mode on my Dell 20" lcd monitor. Outside of that everything seems to work fine so far (after 1 day of use). I'll test for a few more days and post if I discover any problems. If I don't post, all works fine.

Thanks.

you haver to go to vxconf, generate xorg.conf, then edit it manually.

please     edit xorg.conf again, in the Section "Monitor",
add:

ModeLine    "1680x1050" 146.2 1680 1960 2136 2240 1050 1080 1086 1089 -hsync +vsync
Modeline    "1680x1050" 147.14 1680 1784 1968 2256 1050 1051 1054 1087 -HSync +Vsync
ModeLine     "1680x1050" 146.2 1680 1784 1968 2256 1050 1051 1054 1087 -hsync -vsync
ModeLine   "1680x1050" 119.0 1680 1728 1760 1840 1050 1053 1059 1080
ModeLine   "1680x1050 (Dell')" 147.14 1680 1784 1960 2240 1050 1058 1063 1103
Modeline    "1680x1050"  140.00  1680 1784 1968 2256  1050 1051 1054 1087
ModeLine    "1680x1050 (GTF)" 147.14 1680 1784 1968 2256 1050 1051 1054 1087
Modeline "1680x1050" 147.14 1680 1784 1968 2256 1050 1051 1054 1087

then
add another line in the section "Screen"

Option         "metamodes" "1680x1050_60_0 +0+0"

since you've got big hard disk, you should try adding swap file at size of 64G, it could boost pc performances a bit plus overclocking...
but dell is crap yankee  IT salves designed machine, OEM manufactured  in cina amoi city.... the capacitors on dell 're fake, you'd better change all capacitor on dell machine asap.... if you 're poor student or unemployed for ages, better buy the capacitors from your local electronic spareparts whole sale  market, then soldering by yourself  replacing all capacitors on dell....

64 gig swap file is NOT worth consideration. a 4 gig swap on a box with 2 gig ram may be of some value. over clocking is for people with nothing better to do. dell does use cheap parts but changing the caps on a motherboard is a lot of work for anyone who just wants to test a linux beta. seriously? vincent2.. I am sure your over clocked, liquid cooled, swaped out, 64bit super computer rules but bad advice is bad advice.

you should test it by adding 64G swap file to your PCs,runing java, photo video processing, 3D design, copy and transfer large files in gb size ....... see the differences by yourself.
of course overclocking is not for your simpletons living in uk.no need liquid cooled at all for overclocking, just go to BIOS setting of your MB, chose right multiplifier plus FSB frequencies for your cpu.very simple to do..
you can always  pop into your local indian south asian run eletrical repair shop for soldering jobs at 5 quit replacing capacitors.....or you can go dell HP official service centre being charged for 50-100 euro for replacing capacitors.

Fourth-ed (if that's a word... but if it's not... +1 on this)

64G swap file to enhance performance.... I dont know where you got that from, but it's the most ridiculous thing i've ever read on a forum.  You must not understand how swapping works, or what it's meant for

Just installed vl7.1 64 bit beta 43  on gygabyte MB  pc box, made unetbootin usk disk at first, then booting, installation (advanced option) went smoothly.

reboot into vl7.1 beta 43 , 64bit,going to xfce4 desktop smoothly.....now alsa can work with exaile playing mp3, but alsa still doesn't work under umplayer gmplayer plus skype and other VOIP tools.playing shoutcast radio streams in several tabs of firefox or opera simultaneously, voice can be mixed......
but chat with skype with  radio stream simultaneously  still not possible.
additionally, wayland  wasn't installed by default, then umplayer gmplayer won't work with sound and video initially, must  go gslapt , install wayland  pkg, then media player would run normally....

B0-43 64bit

Installer stopped at setting passwords. Got out with panel reboot.

claws-mail still crashes when clicking OK in Preferences.

Could not play any DVD. Opening Umplayer X would crash. Could repeat
several times. Ended in login screen. Finally it crashed all the way to the
console. Startx, opening umplayer and no more crash and nothing playing.

Could not play anything with gnome-player.

Logout on panel and in menu goes straight to login screen, no choices
for  suspend etc.

please download wayland  manually and save, install, then you can play dvd and other media streams...

JUST DOWNLOADED VL7.1 BETA 44 ISO, 64 BIT.

INSTALL WENT SMOOTHLY, REBOOT TO XFCE4, but alsa still doesn't work under umplayer gmplayer plus skype
but chat  skype with  radio stream simultaneously PLAYING  still not possiblE.

it's now kernel 3.10.10, HALT AND POWEROFF, INIT 0,shutdown -h COMMANDs STILL CAN'T TURN PC OFF YET.always has to press power button 3-5 secs thus totally switc off the pc===could  be apm modules problem, type:modprobe apm, returned with no such modules ....
GUESS THAT THE kernel 3.10.10  OF VL7.1  OMITED configurING  the apm support as modules, EXPECTING NEW KERNEL 3.11 OF VL7.1 CAN ADDRESS THE MISSING APM MODULES ISSUES.SAME ON THE VL7.0  FINAL 64 BIT PLATFORM, APM MODULE 'S MISSING IN THE KERNELS, REBOOT OFTEN BRINGS pc HANG IN THE DUMMY

vincent2 check your "multiplifier" and maybe increase swap to 128 gig
