I have install VL7 on an older Compaq laptop, and everything worked well out of the box but the scroll on the touchpad. If I run synclient VertEdgeScroll=1 as root it works as it should. How can I make this permanent? Is there something I should be editing or can I have a script run at logon. I have attempted the script but it has to run as root to work and I don't know where it would go anyway.
Any help would be appreciated.

try this

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Touchpad_Synaptics

you can find a copy of the 50-synaptics.conf in your /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d
