System restore for Vector Linux 7.0?
« on: May 27, 2013, 08:25:33 pm »
We all know that Windows XP and later operating systems have a "system restore" function, so what I want to know is this: Does Vector Linux 7.0 have such a function, and if so, what is it, and how do I go about using it?

No, there is no such thing with VL. In fact, I'm unaware of ANY Linux distribution that has that feature.

It's not something I use in Windows, either, and is one of the first things I turn off to conserve disk space and resources.

Actually, there does seem to be something like that. It's called Back In Time and I haven't tried it, only read about it:

Actually, I'm looking for a way to restore Vector Linux 7.0 back to the default installation settings (I don't need to back up my entire hard drive). Any suggestions?

The Windows system restore is just a limited-purpose backup/restore system. There are articles around on using Back In Time for this, all you need to do is configure the proper system paths to backup. Here's the one I originally found in a quick search:

Locator,

Perhaps you are referring to the Skel (restore defaults) setting on the initial VASM screen. It does not require root, if I recall.  I used it once and it worked fine.  Left all my data and restored all or most all defaults.  But I then had to do a whole lot of work to get my system back to the way I like to use it.  So I don't use it if I don't have to.  I would be sure to backup first.
