I'm totally new to linux in general.

I have downloaded and installed V7 Light according to the doc etc.
However when I boot machine I constantly have to select to view or skip video modes selection.
Then I get three options 1)Linux, 2) Linux tui 3) Linux gui.

What ever I select I get to a DOS looking login prompt. I log in and I stay in a 'DOS' looking environment.
How do I get to some sort of a desktop? Or is there no desktop in Light version?

Is it normal that when you start-up the machine that you see Linux being decompressed every time?

Also after I have created the 3 partions, VL won't let me select the 2nd. partition as Swap. I keep getting a "Skipping Swap..."

Before giving up, why not try regular VL?  I too find VL light a bit too nerdy.   Great for some things, but a little hard to use for a lot of us.

The learning curve, while perhaps considerable (depending on where you start) is worth it for most of us.  A world of great free programs awaits.

vfran,  Don't give up!  I am more comfortable with a graphical environment too, and Vector standard edition is excellent.  I learn something new every day, and I'm glad to be done with windows.

All the best,

If you don't get a graphical login screen on reboot, something went wrong during installation.

Sledgehammer is right. VL Light is not for beginners.

Light is a smaller version. It does not have everything that STD
has. Which is why the Desktop was not there.

Stick with it everyone here will be glad to help in anything or
questions that you may have.

No, the desktop was not there because X won't start. IIRC, all ways of installing Light result in at least a window manager, if not a desktop-like environment.

BUT it is true that STD is slightly more likely to go to X as intended, and will be easier to fix if it doesn't as more people are familiar with it so more help is available.

Light is a bad choice for a first Linux; STD is much better for that.
