I noticed that with the newer kernels 3.9.* and up sound is much subdued
and to get back to the original volume I have to increase volume on speaker
by several notches. There were as well error messages on booting
apon hitting 'alsactl restore'.

Case in point, I installed the kernel-9.10.12 to BO-44 64bit got error message:
Code:
alsactl restore
Found hardware: "HDA-Intel" "VIA VT1705" "HDA:11064397,101929b5,00100000"
"0x1019" "0x3135"
Hardware is initialized using a generic method
alsactl: set_control:1328: failed to obtain info for control #1 (No such
file or directory)
alsactl: set_control:1328: failed to obtain info for control #20 (No such
file or directory)
alsactl: set_control:1328: failed to obtain info for control #21 (No such
file or directory)
alsactl: set_control:1328: failed to obtain info for control #28 (No such
file or directory)
alsactl: set_control:1328: failed to obtain info for control #29 (No such
file or directory)
alsactl: set_control:1328: failed to obtain info for control #30 (No such
file or directory)
alsactl: set_control:1328: failed to obtain info for control #31 (No such
file or directory)
alsactl: set_control:1328: failed to obtain info for control #32 (No such
file or directory)
alsactl: set_control:1328: failed to obtain info for control #34 (No such
file or directory)
alsactl: set_control:1328: failed to obtain info for control #35 (No such
file or directory)
alsactl: set_control:1328: failed to obtain info for control #36 (No such
file or directory)

After that sound was much subdued. I played around with alsactl options.
That now eleminated the error messages on "alsactl restore", however,
sound remains subdued.

Has anybody had a similar experience and is there a way to get sound
back to what I would call normal?

It is uderstood that sound controls in alsamixer are all and have been
up 100 %.

Is it a kernel or an alsa problem?

I got my sound back to the state I had had it for years.  Grin

I changed to kernel-3.8.11 in B045 64bit.
Removed alsa-lib, *-oss and *-utils.
Reinstalled again all 3, rebooted and no more muzzled sound.

That might confirm my suspicion that with kernels 3.9/10.* something
is not right as for sound on my desktop PC.

This problem is not only in VL and I solved it the same way in slackel.
There installing kernel 3.8.8.

Code:
uname -a
Linux vector.linux.net 3.8.11 #1 SMP Fri May 3 03:09:32 EDT 2013 x86_64 Pentium(R) Dual-Core  CPU
E5400  @ 2.70GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

I still have the muzzled sound with kernels > 3.8.*
Now vincent2 was kind enough to point me to
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Advanced_Linux_Sound_Architecture
and there at the bottom of the page is "Low sound workaround".
Apparently that can be a problem.

I tried it and put
Code:
pcm.!default {
      type plug
      slave.pcm "softvol"
  }

pcm.softvol {
    type softvol
    slave {
        pcm "dmix"
    }
    control {
        name "Pre-Amp"
        card 0
    }
    min_dB -5.0
    max_dB 20.0
    resolution 6
into /etc/asound.conf.

Unfortunately it does not work and I get errors that is old and or wrong.

Now, in a Salix-14.0.1 test box of mine I installed kernel 3.10.9 and as
expected got muzzled sound. Putting asound.conf into /etc/ it worked
and in alsamixer there is now a Pre-Amp section.

Suggestions to make this asound.conf work for VL are appreciated.
