Thanks, but I think I will solve the problem another way - by going back to a brand of motherboard that I know works with it. And why I switched motherboard brands from the one that worked in the first place has to do with learning to NEVER trust a motherboard that has been described as "refurbished" (the motherboard in question "died" within two weeks of purchase).

I was FINALLY able to update my computer system AND continue to use Vector Linux 7.0 as well, I solved the problem by switching to a motherboard that I knew would accept Vector Linux 7.0 as the operating system.

That is excellent Locator, Sorry you had bad luck with the msi board , but hardware can still be an issue with linux, if not just on it's own accord.
would you be willing to share the motherboard you choose? This could help many others who are in need of an update, and hoping to find a post that may help.

The  motherboard in question is a Gigabyte Z77-DS3H (ATX form factor).
