Should I use Checkinstall or Make install?
« on: November 19, 2013, 08:32:12 am »

I am installing up to date wireless drivers for my card following these directions:

Code: [Select]
make help
make defconfig-help

If you use this option just use the 'make defconf-option' in replacement for make menuconfig above. For example to compile all DRM drivers:

# as a user
make defconfig-drm
make -j4
# as root
make install
It it better to use 'make install' or checkinstall?  What command do I use for checkinstall if that is the way to go?

I would instead of make install with a DESTDIR setting.
right after "make -j4" # The "-j4" can be dropped btw,
do this
Code: [Select]
mkdir PKG
make DESTDIR=$PWD/PKG install
cd PKG
makepkg -l y -c n ../kernel_backports-<your_version_here>-i586-1vl70.txz
cd ..
installpkg *.t?z
If you ever need to uninstall, you can safely do removepkg kernel_backports
