ATI Driver Installs for VL64-7.0

purple- useful macros
red- code entered at the command line.
Blue - files
italics - text added/edited to a file.
This is the solution I would suggest for someone getting ready to install the drivers, but who has not done so already – in other words,  this is the guide for start to finish installation of ATI desktop-gpu drivers for VL64-7.0.  This same guide is attached as a pdf to this post.

Download the drivers (in this example, Catalyst 13.12) to /home/<username>/ and extract them.
Backup as a different filename.
Delete all xorg.conf files and all files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/
Add radeon and radeonhd to the blacklists if they are not already there.
Go into a second session, login as root, install the drivers, run aticonfig, then edit xorg.conf and add the Modes for resolution to the monitor section - these may be different for you ("1920x1080" "2560x1600" etc) and are based on the native resolution of your monitor.
Download the ATI Drivers ( from AMD’s website and put them in /home/<username>/
Unzip (should end up with /home/<username>/
cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/roarde
   rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf*
   rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/*
   nano /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-fglrx.conf
(or blacklist.conf if blacklist-fglrx.conf does not exist)
Add blacklist radeon and blacklist radeonhd if they are not already there.
Save and close.
   Login as root.
init 2
   aticonfig --initial
   nano /etx/X11/xorg.conf

Add Modes “1440x900” “1280x800” “1024x768” “800x600” “640x480” to the monitor section, if they are not there already.
Save and exit.
   init 4
   Wait 30s
If x-login is presented, success.
Else    (ctl-alt-F3
init 2
Login as root
cp /etc/X11/roarde /etc/X11/xorg.conf
init 4
