To add to hata_ph's observation: smb.conf-sample is there, but it's empty.

smb.conf:
Whatever was supplied by the samba package was formerly being overwritten by (or ignored because of) VASM's smb.conf copy. During this time, samba.SlackBuild failed to keep up with location changes in Samba's source tree; probably not noticed because the other, outdated copy was there. Samba's slackbuild needs to be updated and probably should copy the smb.conf-example that would be generated to smb.conf IF there's not one there already.

A little more info at https://bitbucket.org/VLCore/vabs/issue/45/samba-doesnt-start-on-fresh-install
Just don't have time to go further with this one myself right now.

just downloaded vl 7.1 rc 1.1 the latest 64bit, installation went smoothly with usb disk, then booted into system desktop nicely.
but kernel's  still 3.12.16...now heartbleeding 's prevalent, kernel 3.14 series offers""known exploit detection"  features for securities, hope can get kernel 3.14 on test repo soon for better securities.

you should try kernel 3.14.1 now from test repo, you'll see the differences.

VL7.1 32bit RC2 appears to be missing startfluxbox in /usr/bin although fluxbox appears to be installed and appears in xsessions it fails to start if session is selected

perhaps my aging hardware but still booting /dev/sda2 via cd as installer hangs at installing bootloader when lilo to /dev/sda2 is selected in the installer

I get this error message, after installing RC2 over RC1 but not formatting the home partition:

System has no Xclients file, so starting a failsafe Xterm session.  Windows will have focus only if the mouse pointer is above them.  To get out of this mode type "exit" in the window.

I can start XFCE by typing startx but not ideal....

Can keep my home partition intact which is an improvement.  Oh an no option for starting fluxbox.

Installed IceWM using the IceWM mods via Gslapt and no entry for that either.

Lyn, was that the 32-bit or 64-bit version? I rarely format /home and the 64-bit version installed fine for me.

Lyn, that package is not a meta package that will pull in IceWM. It is used in the ISO creation for the Light version. The updated alpha release of Light is in the same directory as RC2. You are invited to give it a try. Wink

Did you, perchance, forget to check the "Install XFCE" box during install?

I see the iso for RC1 but not for RC2 in the repository.  I probably don't know the new and wonderful place those things are stored as I haven't been around for quite some time.  If I'm going to do testing I'd like it to be the latest build.  Link, anyone?
