Hello, I enabled both "testing" and "unstable" repositories in VL 7.0 LIGHT via gslapt and then updated the repo database when prompted. But I'm still not seeing any "LXQt" packages showing up?

"untested" was not a repo source when 7.0 was assembled. It can be added. As root, edit /etc/slapt-get/slapt-getrc. Add the following line somewhere in the first, ohhh, seven lines or so:

#DISABLED=http://vlcore.vectorlinux.com/pkg/untested/veclinux-7.0/x86/:CUSTOM

That adds the repo as a source FOR 32-bit 7.0 VERSIONS. If you're running 64-bit or 7.1, just modify the line according to hata_ph's links. Now restart GSlapt and enable/disable it, or do so with a text editor.

Keep in mind that packages in untested are purged weekly, so if a mention is more than a week old it's either been moved or simply deleted. The buildscripts are still present, so if you're interested in a particular package that might have been purged, ask in its thread about it.

Thanks roarde.

I'll do a 'download only' from glsapt to grab the packages locally and then play with 'em later.
If the repo gets purged in the meantime then I'll have 'em on hand here.

Argh, except gslapt just threw out a broken dependency issue (neesds qt >= 4.8.3) ... I'll see if I can figure out how to force it ...

I installed it, and that went fine.  After logging in I did a few things (started Firefox, changed the wallpaper, little stuff like that).  All of that went fine, nothing exploded, so that was good.  I'll keep testing stuff when I can.  The basic functionality seems to be in place.  Assuming that development continues as it has so far, it looks like this will be an excellent DE for *nix machines.

Ah, that did it, I didn't have "testing" enabled last time.
I've got the lxqt packages w/ associated upgrades downloaded now.
I'll check them out at some point later after backing up my system.

Thanks hata_ph :  }

p.s.— If, by chance, the "untested" repo server gets purged before I get around to testing LXQt will slapt-get/gslapt still be aware that the packages exist locally?

I went ahead and installed lxqt-meta after backing up my system. LXQt first launch had no icons and no panel. Eventually got icons, but lack of panel persisted.

kevjonesin, can you try update glib2-2.37.6 on your lxqt box?

Since lxqt use latest libfm and menu-cache, if you are using the default LXDE DE on 7.0 Light, you might want to update your pcmanfm, obconf, lxpanel and others LXDE packages available on the testing repo...
btw, since LXQt is gonna replace LXDE in the future, I would suggest do not install both on the same box...

For the missing icons on lxqt, you need to choose a icons theme under LXQt System Settings. You might want to download or use another full icons theme for better appearances.
If the icons still show blank or empty after change to a new icon theme, most probably is due to the desktop file is pointing to an invalid icon or not using full icon path.

I couldn't resist trying this on 7.1 Light.  Grin

Enabled untested repo and installed meta package. After selecting an icon theme and a few more appearance tweaks, log out and back in, the menu had icons for almost all entries. Right-clicking the desktop icons revealed a "Shortcut editor" which let me choose icons.

Obviously this is far from a finished product, but it looks promising.

Hata_ph, upgrading to  glib2-2.37.6 (via 'testing' repo) did the trick. LXQt now has a panel and seems to be working fine for the most part. Most icons are now visible as well—in general and in PCManFM-Qt specifically.

I had a hunch that there might be issues installing LXQt alongside a preexisting LXDE. Hence I backed up my partition before starting to play. And this old laptop isn't my primary system. That distinction belongs to my (slightly less) old desktop. I figure I'll thrash on this a bit and then reinstall from the partition image backup if need be. Might even enable 'testing' and then upgrade all packages just to see what happens.  Wink  I'll likely play with upgrading the stock LXDE packages, as you suggested, before I get that adventurous though. :  }

Thanks for your tips, hata_ph. I'll post back here if I come across more worth noting. I'm also open to suggestions as to features and configurations to test and explore.
