hopefully comming from mageia
« on: September 16, 2015, 10:20:37 pm »

Hello,

After being forced by a full / (root) partition (apparently there was not enough space left to do an update) to do a reinstall of Mageia, I´ve come accross enough problems/ changes that I´ve decided to abandon it for yourselves.

However during the, vector linux, install both my keyboard and mouse die. As in neither respond..... even the caps lock and number lock don´t respond.

Doesn´t matter which of the choices I choose both the keyboard and mouse are dead at the second screen. (the one where the choice is between advanced or otherwise).

I´ve tried both 7.1 light and 64 7.1 light and get the same response.

The system is 2t HD, of which 47g is / , 4 g ram , swap is 12g , the rest /home. Bought the mb this year.

With the command line install I get a million lines of text, the last of which indicates a kernel panic and within the screen it thereś also something about unable to mount the file system.

Yet rebooting into mageia there´s no such problem.

I know the printout would be helpful, but with a dead keyboard and mouse things get difficult.

So has anyone got an idea about how to keep the mouse and keyboard alive during the install?

Edit to add.

It took some looking about to find them but I managed to find the md5sum and confirmed them as correct. Don´t understand why the md5sums are not listed on the download page.

Welcome.

I would suspect the install medium.  Before trying other stuff, I would download VL 7.1 64 again, unetbootin it to a usb stick and install from there.

The preferred method is to use dd to write the iso to a USB stick. I have experienced some problems using unetbootin.

Check the connections for mouse/keyboard to the tower (assuming is not a laptop)

I agree with Nightflier.  However, being lazy, and knowing unetbootin pretty well, I have always used it to load VL on my Lenovo ideapad and samsung laptop, without problem.

No, lazy is just burning the ISO to a disc and installing it that way.  ;D

I also agree that unetbootin is not the way to go use dd works every time.

That's me! I'm too dense to undertand dd and unetbooting on a desktop tower and i don't have a laptop :D

this is the officially supported method of making
a bootable usb stick for vector linux

insert usb stick

type as root

Code: [Select]
fdisk -l
see what drive designation your usb stick is.
we'll use /dev/sdb as the example for this post

change directory to where the iso is located

Code: [Select]
cd /home/user
now this next step will hose your system if you accidentally use  the wrong dirctory so make sure that you use the correct drive designation from fdisk -l and remember im using /dev/sdb as an example, yours may or may not be different

Code: [Select]
dd if=name.of.iso of=/dev/sdb
(may take a couple minutes)

and thats it, now you have a bootable usb stick which you can install from

I found the instruction on how to use the dd command in your how to's

and followed it.

Unfortunately when booting from the usb the screen tells me I'm

missing an operating system

Which suggests my download is corrupt.

So I'll take the HDD to a friends computer and install Vector there.

Thanks for your assistance.

And sorry for the slow reply.

Sounds to me like you may not have the usb drive turned on in your bios.

I would check that next.  And if that doesn't solve it, I would try to install VL 7.1 on another usb stick.  Or try retired1af's suggestion and install to a disk.  I think VL light installs to a cdrom.
