VL7.1 x64 (Light or Standard) Login Splash Freeze

Laptop: Acer Aspire E5-771-74E7
Video: Intel HD5500
Drive-type: Sata SSD
Booting from: partition 5 (Grub2)
Vector location: partition 7
Grub2 boot: linux /boot/vmlinuz, initrd /boot/initrd.gz

(vector was installed without a bootloader since I'm using grub2 on another partition for my Linux systems)

Tried both 7.1 Light and Standard x64.  Same result.  Installation and booting seem fine.  When the mouse cursor shows up, I get one of two scenarios:
[1] Desktop splash with mouse cursor
[2] Grey Screen with mouse cursor

In both situations, I can move the mouse for about 3 seconds before it freezes.  Freeze happens whether I move mouse or not.

I tried with the different window option managers.  Same result.

I haven't checked the X log yet.  Any ideas?

I guess you are using the grub installation from another Linux install, and modified that to load VL?

Try appending a 2 to the boot options. That should bring you to a text only login prompt.

Correct - I'm running a few different distros.  I prefer to use a single bootloader on my laptop.

I currently don't have any parameters passed to the kernel.  I'll try 2 and see if it freezes.

Turns out this is related to acceleration on the Intel Broadwell HD5500 (integrated).

I was able to stop the freeze with either solution:

Code: [Select]
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf

Section "Device"
   Identifier  "Intel Graphics"
   Driver      "intel"
   Option      "AccelMethod"  "uxa"
EndSection
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Intel_graphics#SNA_issues

Code: [Select]
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Intel Graphics"
   Driver "intel"
   Option "NoAccel" "True"
EndSection
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Intel_graphics#X_freeze.2Fcrash_with_intel_driver

Bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/1432194

Unfortunately, performance drops too much for what I need.  VL Light 7.1 appears to have the latest xf86-video-intel so I'm going to have to try some other drivers and see what works.  Suggestions appreciated.

Removed the default installed xf86-video-intel and installed the latest from the main website.  Same freeze.

This bug posting appears here at FreeDesktop:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=89360

As posted by users in the bug, another solution that works is to disable the integrated graphics engine via kernel command line params:

Code: [Select]
intel_iommu=igfx_offhttps://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/Intel-IOMMU.txt

I'll be using the kernel param for now until a fix is released.  Not sure how performance is impacted yet.

Another issue I ran into with the HD5500 is tearing, scrolling, and flickering when quitting out of an X session to the console.

Another post from Arch which describes this problem:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=196352

This issue can be fixed by adding the following to the kernel boot params:

Code: [Select]
i915.enable_ips=0

just out of curiosity what happens if you insert the install media (thumb drive, cd/dvd)
and boot the vector linux installation that way....... there are instructions on how to do so at the very first page that appears....   someone correct me if im wrong but its

Code: [Select]
linux root=/dev/sdX ro
where sdX is the partition the kernel is on

Booting from the install media is working correctly.  No freezes or graphical glitches.  Here's my command line:

Code: [Select]
cat /proc/cmdline
rw root=/dev/ram BOOT_IMAGE=kernel/sata root=/dev/sda9 ro
